Today’s blog post is extra special because it’s not about me at all!! Today’s post is about my fabulous photography partner-in-crime, the fabulous Erica Hang of
Erica Lynn Photography. Erica is a North Shore child, family and senior photographer! For those of you who don’t know, Erica is my “go-to” girl for shooting weddings with. I even have many brides who make a special request for Erica as the second shooter because they know how awesome she is! I still get many requests for family/kids/senior photos and you can read about
why I don’t shoot them anymore but for those of you shopping around for a photographer, look no more!
I asked Erica a few questions below….and if you’re curious, she interviewed me as well and you can check out her blog post on me
here.
Q: What is your most favorite picture you have taken?
A: That is a hard question but I would have to go with a picture I took a couple years ago. I always come back to it and it’s one of my favorites. I have an obsessions with eyes and the color purple so I am stuck on this picture.
Q: What do you love shooting most and why?
A: SENIORS. Ok, wait, let me rephrase that… High School SENIOR GIRLS! It’s such a monumental time in their life. They love being pampered and they are SO unique, each girl is so different. It’s neat to get to know them before their session so that their session is customized to their uniqueness. And it’s fun making them feel beautiful and special. Sometimes they don’t know they are beautiful, but I do and I love showing them.
Q: What do YOU look for in a client?
A: I look for a client who is willing to do what is needed to get the shot. It might sound like craziness but I love when they trust me enough to be willing. In my last session my clients trusted me enough to let me throw potato flakes all over them. Actually, the dad ended up tossing the potato flakes for me but they tried my idea. (We were making fake snow)
Q: Why do you like to specialize in families and seniors?
A: I think it’s easy for me to photograph kids because it’s the stage of life I’m in personally. I get kids. They are pretty easy to photograph, and they are genuine. I like specializing in seniors girls because they make me feel younger. Haha. Actually, my senior girls get to have their hair and makeup done with their sessions so it’s just basically like a spa day for me.
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: I must have girl time, as much as possible. Maybe that’s why I love photographing senior girls. More girl time!
Also, playing volleyball all night would be my ideal evening. Lastly, I also love a date night at the bookstore with my man.
Q: What’s the first thing people find out about you?
A: Probably that I have 3 kids. I mean, it’s my life. All day long. Naturally, it comes up pretty quickly.
Q: What book are you reading right now?
A: The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer. I know that doesn’t sound very exciting, but I am trying to keep up with my kids so I try to read as many educational books as I can.
Q: Tell us about your family.
A: Oh this is my favorite part. I have been married for almost 11 years to my husband, Peter. We got married young and had kids right away. It wasn’t part of the plan to have kids right away but I am so glad God’s in charge and not me because I love being a mom. I have 1 boy and 2 girls. They have changed my life. They literally make me a better person every day. Nothing keeps me more accountable then 3 littles watching how I live. We also have 1 foster baby that we all love SO SO much.
Q: Tell us one embarrassing or awkward photography moment.
A: One time one of my clients husbands did NOT want to have a photo shoot. I get it. Most men are not dying to have their pictures taken but he complained almost the whole time. He just wanted to get dinner. I was trying to be friendly so that he wouldn’t hate the whole session but he kept trying to get me to come to dinner with them so he could buy me a drink. I opted out.
Q: What has been the most challenging part of being a family & senior photographer?
A: 3 year olds. Haha. It’s sort of true though. It’s a tough age. They don’t want to do anything that is suggested of them. They just want to explore and do what they want to do. That’s why I try to let them wander and explore and I just follow them and talk to them. I get the job done but I think the mom’s get easily stressed that their little person is not “pose-able.”
(Side note…this next pic is special to ME! We have this picture on a large canvas hanging in our little guy’s room. I just love how Erica captured his free spirit. I want him to remember to live life with that much joy and fervor!)
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being a family & senior photographer?
A: Being entrusted with people’s memories is pretty stinkin’ special. I have had the privilege of photographing a handful of births. It doesn’t get more intimate than that. It means a lot to get to witness intimate moments like that.
Wow! Great post and great pictures!
