I don’t mean theme in a literal sense here – I’m talking about the story the photos will tell. Where are you shooting the photos? What do you want them to depict? If you’re going for a casual set of photos at the coffee shop where you met – don’t wear a ball gown. Conversely, if your backdrop is something dramatic like the Cultural Center, leave your jeans in the closet. See what I’m getting at here? The clothes should fit the setting of your session.

Step 2: Color

Create a color palate complementary to the setting you’ve chosen. For example, if you are shooting by Chicago’s lakefront, you’ll be photographed amongst deep blues, vibrant greens, cement gray, sandy tans, and perhaps the peachy glow of a sunset. You don’t want your clothing to blend into the scene, you want it to enhance the colors around you. Yellow, mint, khaki, raspberry, brown, and cream would all work well.

Many people have a “signature color” that makes them feel good, or perhaps brings out their eye color, etc. Do consider this in your choice. These photos are about you!

I also LOVE a pop of color in photography. There’s a reason so many people want to be photographed in Christian Louboutin shoes – the peak of a red sole is a stunning little surprise. To achieve a similar effect, throw on a neutral dress with a bright necklace, or style your man in black and white with a bold colored tie.

Step 3: Shop in Your Closet First

Is there a dress that makes you feel like a million bucks? How about your fiance’s go-to blazer? Consider them. You don’t always need to purchase new.

If you still have “nothing to wear,” head out shopping and bring a trusted friend for honest feedback. Remember to only buy items that are truly you and can be worked into your wardrobe later.

Step 4: Fit and Flatter

I’ve seen many occasions in which people get so caught up in trying to make a big impression with their clothes that they totally forget the most basic rule for looking good: fit! A perfectly fitted piece of clothing makes the most powerful statement, even if it’s as simple as a black dress.

Make sure you also consider your body type when making a decision. If you know you look amazing in dresses that nip in at the waist and gently flare out into an a-line shape, now isn’t the time to do the opposite. As they say, flattery will get you everywhere.

Step 5: Test it out

Once you have your options narrowed down, get the camera out. Have someone snap a few photos of you in each look. Sometimes even the most beautiful outfit can look unappealing in a photo. Best to find out now and not when your proofs come back. For extra credit (and if your fiance is willing), take shots of the two of you in your respective looks to make sure they go well together.
