My husband Dave is an avid reader. Since I’ve known him he’s had a reading list so long that I lost interest half way through 🙂 I on the other hand am just not a reader. I don’t know why…sometimes I feel like books go on and on about the same thing and I usually feel like I got the point in the first few chapters. Anyway, I know it sort of annoys Dave that I never finish a book. Well, I guess this is my big announcement to him that I promise to finish reading this book! I borrowed a copy of a book called “Kisses from Katie”…an incredible story of a young teenager who left all she had to live her life fully for Christ in Uganda serving orphans. She has adopted 14 girls and has started a wonderful ministry out there. If you have a second, you have to check this video out.
Why of all books have I chosen this one to finish? Well, there are several reasons. My goal is to finish this book before March (yes I have to give myself that much time!) because Dave and I are going to Haiti. We are going to Haiti to visit orphanages and to learn how the church and how we as a family can better support them. I want to be fully honest and say that I was and still am completely scared to commit to this trip. It means leaving my son for 7 full days to go to a country that is filled with tragedy, disease and incredible poverty. I know that going on this trip will be a life changing experience. It means that I can no longer be blind to what is going on around the world!
My husband Dave spent some time living in Sudan. He seeks all things uncomfortable. I on the other hand have spent my whole life looking for comfort. As I was reading this book, something Katie said struck me. In her introduction she says in response to people asking her if she is afraid… “I am much more terrified of living a comfortable life in a self-serving society and failing to follow Jesus than I am of any illness or tragedy.” WOW. I ask myself how many of us live and strive for comfort? How can we be comfortable knowing that there are approximately 143 million orphans in the world?!
When we talk to others about adoption, so many say that adoption is something that you have to feel CALLED to. Well how come only so few are “called” to adopt? Is it because we are UNCOMFORTABLE with the idea of bringing in a child that isn’t actually ours? Maybe it won’t be the same…maybe you fear you could never love that child the same as your biological children. It’s scary, it’s uncomfortable ….but I really believe that God is not calling us to be safe or comfortable. Will you give up your comfort to give a child a home? I’m not judging…simply challenging you to live a life a little less comfortable…whichever way God leads you to do it!
I know that was a lot…thank you for sticking through and reading all of it and allowing me to share my heart with all of you….and because every blog post is better with a picture…here is a picture of my little guy.

Read the book in two days…it is amazing…she is amazing…GOD IS AMAZING. It is a beautiful picture of a life completely sold out for Him and His work, His plan,His glory…continuously “broken and poured out”….
You made me cry, Keren. I love you so much!
Keren, that was awesome!!! It truly made me consider how I like you have always sought comfort, and what is it that God would have me to do in this world concerning missions. You and Dave are blessed to be a blessing to any you minister to. I do have a desire to go on a missions trip. I cant wait until I am able to do so. Enjoy every meaningful step you take, for they will truly be precious in the eyes of God.
God speed on your trip!! Mateo, will be fine. Just wait until you return to even a higher level/connection between you. Love you much
Sam
